Trekking & City Bike - safe & comfortable

The trekking bike - the companion on all your paths

While many people are just rediscovering hiking, trekking has always been one of the most popular forms of cycling. No wonder, because good trekking bikes (ATB) are real endurance runners, with which you can comfortably cross asphalt, gravel and forest paths and benefit from a combination of comfort and zippy ride.

What is a trekking bike and what features does it have?
A trekking bike is the universal solution for various purposes. Trekking bikes are designed for longer tours on different terrains. This makes them very flexible and combines their characteristics of sportiness and comfort. They are similar in appearance to a mountain bike, but have narrower but treaded tires and everyday equipment such as lights, rain guards and luggage racks. They thus also comply with road traffic regulations. They are often equipped with very comfortable saddles, handlebars and suspension forks. This versatility makes them the perfect bike for avid hobby cyclists who don't want to commit to just one use. Those who like to take their bike shopping or use it for rides and tours will find the perfect companion in the trekking bike. At the same time, their stability also makes it possible to transport loads.

What makes a good trekking bike?
No matter whether it's the way to work, a weekend trip to the nearest lake or a relaxing cycling vacation. Thanks to a sturdy frame, large 28-inch wheels and grippy disc brakes or V-brakes, the trekking bike is a faithful companion on any terrain, always guaranteeing maximum riding safety even with heavily loaded saddlebags.
Depending on your personal requirements, you can focus on individual components when buying a trekking bike. Should it be particularly easy to maintain? Then a model with a low-maintenance hub gear is a good choice. If you are the sporty type who likes to go on longer tours at higher speeds, then a trekking bike with comfortable racing handlebars and 28 mm Gravel tires is the right choice.

How do you find the right size for your trekking bike?
As with any bike, a comfortable ride is of great importance. After all, you don't want to ride through the city and be plagued by back or knee pain. The frame geometry of city and trekking bikes is designed for exactly this feeling of well-being. Nevertheless, there is a risk that you will buy a bike that does not fit your body size perfectly. If you like the look and components of a city bike, it is advisable to take a closer look at the right frame and wheel size. Find out more about this on the Internet or take advantage of our advice. Your body will be very grateful for the choice of the appropriate bike size.

What type of gears are there and which one makes sense for me?
There are many different types of gears for trekking bikes. Ultimately, however, they are all suitable for your new trekking bike. However, there are a lot of things to consider in order to enjoy your new trekking bike for a long time.
Most often, a derailleur is installed on modern trekking bikes. These offer a high degree of flexibility and allow, due to the wide range of gears, to master even climbs. The wear and maintenance effort is higher compared to hub gears, but the spare parts supply is possible everywhere without problems. The derailleur also scores with low acquisition costs.
The hub gears are recommended for all riders who do not want to worry about their gears and are looking for a carefree package. It works reliably, requires little maintenance and functions smoothly under all conditions. Most of the time, the gradation of the gears is not as efficient as a derailleur at first glance, but of course this also depends on the model. For example, a Shimano Alfine hub gear has 8 gears. For long climbs, this is therefore rather not recommended because of the small range of gears.

Disc brake or rim brake?
The disc brake has also found its way into the trekking bike segment in recent years.
Rim brakes are the classic brakes on trekking bikes. They have been used for decades. Rim brakes are light and cheap compared to disc brakes. However, you need more hand force and especially in bad weather rim brakes offer a much worse braking performance. In addition, the wear of rims and brake pads is relatively high. The slightly more expensive disc brakes offer an almost consistently high braking performance in all weather conditions. However, disc brakes weigh on average up to 500g more. In addition, the frame and fork must be reinforced to withstand the loads.  In terms of safety, a disc brake is always preferable to a rim brake. The braking distance is significantly lower in all weather conditions.

City Bike - getting from A to B safely and comfortably

City bikes are primarily designed for daily use in the city. The city bike is something of a jack-of-all-trades in the bicycle universe. And that's a good thing, because the upright seating position, the grippy brakes and the possibility of convenient luggage transport make the city bike easier to use in everyday life, without overtaxing with overly agile handling. Whether with stone chip protection, derailleur, hub dynamo, luggage basket, women's or men's frame, the choice is huge. However, all city bikes have one thing in common: thanks to mounted mudguards, a comfortable saddle and, last but not least, a lighting system that complies with the German Road Traffic Act, riding in all conditions is not only safe, but also a lot of fun.

Why a City Bike?
If you spend a lot of time in the city, you have certainly noticed that the streets there are always clogged with the masses of cars. Parking spaces are few and far between, and the large SUVs further add to the constriction. You can easily escape this stressful situation of driving a car in the city by perceiving the bicycle as a real alternative. Especially in good weather, it is a good idea to use a city bike to do your daily errands. You'll soon discover that you're usually in the fast lane on a bike and can get through city streets much faster than by car. The combination of sporty and practical elements makes a city bike a real wonder weapon. You can easily attach bags or baskets to the rack to carry groceries, and the bike's peculiarities allow you to take various shortcuts that would remain closed to you by car. By attaching mudguards you and your clothes will remain completely dry and clean. If it is also in your interest not to harm the environment by short trips by car, buying a bike for the city is the best decision you can make.

What city bike models are available?
Life in the city can be stressful and exhausting. Drivers in particular know all too well the problems of inner-city traffic jams at rush hour. As a result, the trend in congested cities is increasingly toward bicycles as an alternative. The various providers of rental bikes have taken advantage of this demand. But it is much more cost-effective to invest in your own bike, which will accompany you in every situation. It doesn't matter whether you want to use it for the way to work, the daily shopping or a nice bike tour through the city. The perfect city bike is roadworthy and robust, so that the most diverse surfaces are no problem at all.
What a city bike needs in detail to meet your requirements depends largely on how you want to use your bike and what type of bike appeals to you most visually. The range extends from the classic Dutch bike, urban bike to the cruiser.

  • A Holland bike is a bike that is characterized primarily by an upright seating position. A gear shift and suspension fork you have only in the rarest cases. If then only hub gears. With particularly high-quality wheels, disc brakes are also installed for significantly more security. A Holland bike has its area of application mainly in leisurely strolls to the ice cream parlor or as a means of transport in the urban jungle.
  • Urbanbikes are reduced to the essentials. Two wheels, brakes and a hub gear with belt drive. Nothing else. The belt drive ensures grease-free pants, does not accumulate rust and reduces maintenance.
  • The cruiser makes for envious looks. This bike is all about style and not functionality. The only thing that counts here is looks. The chopper-like geometry makes for particularly comfortable cycling. Many models also feature extra-wide tires without tread. This ensures pleasant damping. Braking is usually in the form of a coaster brake.

What features do trekking and city bikes have?
If you want to ride your bike in the city, it is imperative that the vehicle is roadworthy. It must meet the requirements of the StVO. Otherwise, you will face a fine during inspections by the public order office or the police, which must be paid. For this it is necessary to have a good and reliable lighting system and suitable reflectors. This allows you to see where you are going even in the dark. But more important is the aspect that you will not be overlooked even in the hustle and bustle of city traffic. To be able to react to all unexpected situations in traffic, a good brake on the city bike is also mandatory. The resistant tires also contribute to the fact that shards and sharp stones can cause little damage. The combination of pleasant riding experience, durability and safety is therefore the argument with which the city bikes can trump.

City bikes are so sporty
Overall, city bikes are designed to meet all the requirements of urban traffic. This includes cycling through the streets as quickly as possible. To make this happen, city bikes combine the best features for just this purpose. On the one hand, they are practical. On the other hand, the various models are sturdy bikes that nevertheless have the lightest possible construction. This way, you don't have to make any compromises in terms of looks and can still reach the respective destination with relatively little effort. However, if you want to go on a bike tour that is not connected with any concrete practical use, your trekking bike will also help you here. By mounting a bottle cage, the practical vehicle for the city becomes a piece of sports equipment with which you can be on the move on the forest, bike and field paths of the region. You can experience nature up close and personal and do something for your cardiovascular system through the sporting activity.
