The all-rounder - the trekking bike

The all-rounder - the trekking bike

What is a trekking bike and what are its characteristics?

A trekking bike is the universal solution for various purposes. Trekking bikes are designed for longer tours on different terrain. This makes them very flexible and combines their characteristics of sportiness and comfort. They resemble a mountain bike in appearance, but have narrower but treaded tires and everyday equipment such as lights, rain guards and luggage racks. They thus also comply with road traffic regulations. They are often equipped with very comfortable saddles, handlebars and suspension forks. This versatility makes them the perfect bike for avid hobby cyclists who don't want to commit to just one use. Those who like to take their bike shopping or use it for rides and tours will find the perfect companion in the trekking bike. At the same time, their stability also makes it possible to transport loads.

Which gear type is there and which one makes sense for me?

For trekking bikes, there are many different types of gears. Ultimately, however, they are all suitable for your new trekking bike. Nevertheless, there is a lot that is to be considered so that the joy of the new trekking bike lasts a long time.
Most often, a derailleur is installed on modern trekking bikes. This offers a high degree of flexibility and make it possible, through the wide range of gears, to master even climbs. The wear and maintenance effort is higher compared to hub gears, but the spare parts supply is possible everywhere without problems. The derailleur also scores points for low acquisition costs.
The hub gears are recommended for all riders who want to worry absolutely nothing about their gears and are looking for a carefree package. It works reliably, is low-maintenance and works smoothly under all conditions. Most of the time, the gradation of the gears is not as efficient as a derailleur at first glance, but of course this also depends on the model. For example, a Shimano Alfine hub gear has 8 gears. For long climbs, this is because of the small range of gears therefore rather not recommended.

Disc brake or rim brake?

Disc brakes have also made inroads into the trekking bike segment in recent years,
Rim brakes are the classic brakes on trekking bike. They have been installed for decades. Rim brakes are light and cheap compared to disc brakes. However, you need more hand force and especially in bad weather rim brakes offer a much worse braking performance. In addition, the wear of rims and brake pads is relatively high. The slightly more expensive disc brakes offer an almost consistently high braking performance in all weather conditions. However, disc brakes weigh on average up to 500g more. In addition, the frame and fork must be reinforced to withstand the loads.  In terms of safety, a disc brake is always preferable to a rim brake. The braking distance is significantly lower in all weather conditions.
