Gearshift

The gearshift lever - or bicycle gearshift lever - is used to operate the gearshift on the bicycle. The most common are the so-called index / trigger shift levers that clearly audibly and noticeably engage after each gear change. Rotary shift levers are becoming increasingly popular. On bikes with racing handlebars, shift/brake levers with a vertical mounting position are usually used. The right shift lever operates the rear derailleur and the left is responsible for the movement of the front derailleur.

Depending on the area of use, the requirements are different. Therefore, there is a wide range of shift levers, so that everyone can choose the appropriate and on their own, personal preferences, adapted circuit (shift lever).

What to look for in a shifter

  • Position and accessibility: Make sure the shifter is in a comfortable position on the handlebars and easily accessible without having to take your hands off the grips.

  • Number of gears: Pay attention to the number of gears the shifter controls. The more gears you have, the more flexible you can adjust your ride.

  • Compatibility: Make sure the shifter is compatible with your gear type and your other components.

  • Ergonomics: An ergonomically designed shifter feels comfortable in your hand and makes shifting easy, even on longer rides.

  • Precise shifting: A good shift lever should shift precisely and smoothly, without hooking or skipping.

  • Durability: choose a shifter made of high-quality materials that are durable and long-lasting.

How to get the most out of your shifter

  • Anticipate the route: Shift to the appropriate gear in good time before you change the route. This prevents excessive pressure on the chain and ensures smooth shifting.

  • Shiftduring pedaling rhythm: Try to shift during pedaling rhythm to maintain a steady pedal.

  • Avoid cross-shifting: Try not to use the smallest front chainring with the smallest rear sprocket at the same time, or the largest front chainring with the largest rear sprocket. This can stress the chain and the gears.

  • Maintenance: Keep your shifter clean and lubricate moving parts regularly to ensure smooth shifting.

The shifter is a powerful tool to enhance your bike performance and make your ride more comfortable. By paying attention to position, compatibility, ergonomics and precision, you can ensure that your shifter fits your needs perfectly and gives you a comfortable and efficient ride.
