Cycling shoes from Northwave

In 1993 Northwave introduced the two-coloured Integral shoes, the brand's first MTB shoes. With these shoes, Northwave not only introduced the world of off-road cycling, but also a ground-breaking concept in cycling shoe design with contrasting shoe colours in a single pair of shoes.

Cycling shoes are specifically designed for cycling and can have a flat sole, perfect for commuting by bike or MTB, or a sole with two or three holes to clip into the pedal, optimising power transfer to the pedal. Cycling shoes have stiffer soles than normal outdoor shoes and close with a twist lock, laces and/or Velcro. Cycling shoes must sit comfortably on the foot without slipping.

In the constant pursuit of innovation, Northwave was the first cycling brand to use Gore-Tex® in its cycling shoes in 2004. Since then, the collaboration has grown and strengthened, so that today we can boast no less than 8 different models with a Gore-Tex membrane. No other brand comes close.

In 2015, Northwave continued its strategic partnerships with industry leaders and was the first cycling brand to partner with Michelin to develop a range of technical soles. The core of the partnership was to bring together Michelin's tyre technology and Northwave's footwear expertise. The result was truly innovative soles that enhance the performance of technical off-road footwear and feature a truly original design.

What is Gore-Tex®?

It is a synthetic fabric made of microporous Teflon that provides triple protection by making the product to which it is applied waterproof, windproof and breathable. The Gore-Tex membrane is extremely thin and is designed to prevent the penetration of water from outside and wind, while at the same time wicking perspiration to the outside. The collaboration between Gore-Tex® and Northwave therefore makes it possible to produce shoes of an extremely high quality level.

Why is a cycling shoe with a Gore-Tex membrane waterproof?

The pores of the Gore-Tex® membrane are extremely smaller than a drop of water, so that no rain can penetrate the shoe. At the same time, breathability is ensured by the fact that the pores of the Gore-Tex® fabric are larger than a water vapour molecule, so that the sweat produced can escape from the shoe. The special structure of this material protects against wind and prevents the foot from cooling down while cycling.

What is Primaloft®?

Northwave has always had a pioneering spirit. This has led to the company being the first on the market to introduce new solutions, technologies and textile materials into its products.
The 2020 collection marks the beginning of a successful synergistic collaboration between Northwave and Primaloft®. Primaloft® is an insulating technology used in many outdoor garments and was originally developed for the US military. Primaloft® is a fabric made from polyester microfibres - the smallest ever developed - that is extremely lightweight and known for its excellent thermal insulation and water-repellent properties.
Primaloft fabric is characterised by its unparalleled thermal insulation. Thanks to its special fibres that store body heat in small pockets, even the bravest can brave the cold while enjoying their winter tour.
