How it all began...

Hamish Acland was fed up with polyester layers. He literally couldn't smell them anymore because they stank so bad. The then pro rider for Völkl Ski comes from the land of merino wool - New Zealand - and has a natural affinity with merino wool and the mountains where the wool is grown.

In 2009 Hannah and Hamish Acland founded Mons Royale, Hamish's skiing and Hannah's design background combined with her agricultural roots have given Mons Royale a unique platform to create a brand - including her love of action and adventure sports. Today, Hannah continues to lead the design direction of the brand, with Hamish as CEO. The two-person team has grown to over 40 employees across three offices worldwide. Vancouver, Innsbruck and Wanaka.

Since 2016, MTB pros and all other fans of whirring bike chains have been benefiting from the functional layers that "spread" the spirit and design of the athletes, as they say in the scene.

Advantages of merino over other materials

• Merino wicks moisture away from the skin and can absorb up to 30% of its own weight before it feels wet.
• Even on the coldest days, Merino keeps you warm because of its natural insulating properties.
• Merino wool fibres are much thinner than ordinary wool fibres. As a result, merino wool garments are incredibly breathable and quick-drying.
• Wool is naturally rich in nitrogen and water, which requires higher oxygen levels in the environment to burn. Merino wool fibres are super-fine, itch-free and luxuriously soft against the skin.

How Mons Royale works and what sets them apart...

1. Spinning yarn
   Our wool is spun in Süedwolle. The company is recognised as the world market leader for worsted yarn for weaving, circular and flat knitting from pure wool and wool blends. Certified with the latest eco-certifications including Bluesign and Oeko-Tex standards.

2. Cut & sew
   Mons Royale is proud to partner with Shanghai Challenge Textiles (SCT), an innovative world-class manufacturer specialising in merino wool. SCT is the first manufacturer in Shanghai to be awarded the new Chinese environmental certification.

3. Packaging
   Mons Royale has removed 90% of virgin plastic from our hangtags and accessories and replaced it with recycled and natural alternatives. Products are packaged in compostable plant-based bags and FSC-certified paper.

4. Shipping
   99% of all Mons Royale products are transported by container ship, which causes on average 20 times less CO2 emissions than air freight.

5. Clothing care
   Merino wool is a natural fibre, so wash and dry with care. Use non-abrasive detergents, warm to cool machine wash and dry in the shade. Due to the natural odour-inhibiting properties of merino wool, a Mons garment can be washed less, which significantly reduces water consumption.
