What TECHNOLOGIES are there?
A basic distinction is made between single-ply and dual-ply casings.
Single ply casing (single ply casing):
A nylon fabric ply is wrapped around the two bead cores. As a result, the sidewall consists of two layers of fabric and the fabric overlaps three times under the tread. The standard construction for all bicycle tyres.
Dual ply casing:
Two plies of fabric are combined and wrapped around the bead cores. The finished carcass then has four plies on the sidewalls and as many as 6 plies under the tread. This is how MAXXIS downhill tyres are made.
Wire bead core:
The bead core must hold the tyre securely on the rim. High-quality wire is very suitable for this - the disadvantages are: Not foldable and somewhat heavier (approx. 50g more).
Foldable bead core:
Rings made of Kevlar or another aramid fibre also hold the tyres securely on the rim. Lower weight and easy transport due to small pack size are the advantages.
Bead core made from carbon fibres:
For tubeless road bike tyres, special bead cores must be used to keep the tyre on the rim without a tube and at very high pressure. MAXXIS has developed carbon fibre bead cores for this purpose.
Threads per inch (TPI)
The number of nylon threads per inch (=2.54cm) of tyre fabric. Low numbers mean stable, heavy fabric. The higher the TPI number, the better the tyre adapts to the ground and therefore has a more comfortable ride. The weight is also reduced.
Maxxis always specifies the number of threads = TPI in one carcass ply - some other tyre manufacturers add up the threads of all (3 to 6) carcass plies plus the puncture protection plies.
