WHAT TECHNOLOGIES ARE THERE?
Basically, a distinction is made between single ply and double ply casings.
Single ply casing:
A fabric ply of nylon is wrapped around the two bead cores. As a result, the sidewall consists of two fabric plies and under the tread the fabric overlaps three times. The standard construction for all bicycle tires.
Dual ply casing:
Two plies of fabric are combined and wrapped around the bead cores. The finished carcass then has four plies on the sidewalls and as many as 6 plies under the tread. This is how MAXXIS downhill tires are made.
Wire bead core:
The bead core must hold the tire securely on the rim. High quality wire is very suitable for this - the disadvantages are: Not foldable and somewhat heavier (about 50g more).
Foldable bead core:
Rings made of Kevlar or other aramid fiber also hold the tires securely on the rim. Lower weight and easy transport due to small pack size are the advantages.
Bead core made of carbon fibers:
For tubeless road bike tires, special bead cores must be used to hold the tire on the rim without a tube and at very high pressure. MAXXIS has developed carbon bead cores for this purpose.
Threads per inch (TPI)
The number of nylon threads per inch (=2.54cm) of tire fabric. Low numbers mean stable, heavy fabric. The higher the TPI number, the better the tire adapts to the surface and thus has a more comfortable ride. In addition, the weight decreases.
Maxxis always specifies the thread count = TPI in a carcass ply - some other tire manufacturers add the threads of all (3 to 6) carcass plies plus the puncture protection plies.
