Flyer - E-bikes like Swiss clockwork
Switzerland is known around the world for watches made with millimetre precision and high-precision knives. Despite its status as a mecca for sporty and nature-loving cyclists, Switzerland is less well known for its e-bike production. The Swiss company Flyer is one of the European e-bike pioneers with its globally recognised e-bike range.
Flyer - the e-bike pioneer from Switzerland
For over 20 years now, the Flyer brand has stood for maximum passion in e-bike design. The company and its more than 300 employees are based in the tranquil town of Huttwil in the Swiss canton of Bern. Flyer is not only the largest employer in the "flower town", but also gains its innovative strength for e-bike development there. The company, which was founded in 2001 and was formerly known as Biketec AG, sells over 60,000 e-bikes all over the world every year, with exports accounting for around 75 per cent. In addition to the entire DACH region, the main markets also include Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
The Flyer story - from prototype to mass market
Strictly speaking, the Flyer brand's success story began in the early 1990s. As early as 1993, founder Philipp Kohlbrenner recognised the newly developing need for mobility and developed a motorised electric bicycle from a vehicle battery and the windscreen wiper motor of a lorry. Based on this prototype, numerous further developments were created. The Flyer Classic, the first production model, was finally born in 1995. In the early 2000s, lithium-ion batteries were used as energy storage systems for the first time in Europe in the design of the Flyer C series e-bikes. The resulting weight saving and extended range can certainly be described as the initial spark for the e-bike market in Europe. To this day, the Flyer brand has remained true to its principles and continues to focus on stylish design and innovative technologies. It is no coincidence that the Swiss company works closely with technology suppliers such as BOSCH and Panasonic.
What makes Flyer bikes so special?
- Thanks to the use of state-of-the-art materials, Flyer bikes are particularly light, which also makes everyday handling much easier.
- The combination of a low basic weight, efficient drive and powerful battery technology ensures long ranges.
- As a responsible company from Switzerland, Flyer focusses on sustainability in the development and production of its bikes.
- Bikes from the Flyer product forge are repeatedly honoured with awards for both design and technical solutions.
Four segments from e-tourer to e-crossover
When the Swiss company started out over two decades ago, there was not much sign of a broad expansion into the bicycle market. Today, Flyer has the right e-bike for almost every taste and requirement.
To help customers and prospective customers find their way through the jungle of models, Flyer categorises its e-bikes into four segments. Particularly practical: The manufacturer does not use a number of model designations, but instead assigns a model series to each category. This makes it easier to get an overview:
"E-Tour": The Flyer E-Tour models from the Gotour series are ideal for those who want to go on a great voyage of discovery with their bike and manage everyday life efficiently. The premium perfectionists among the e-bikes score points with various frame shapes, high-quality components, a modern design and seamless integration of the drivetrain into the bikes.
"E-Urban": The models from Flyer's E-Urban segment go by the attractive name of Upstreet. The bikes are ideal companions for commuting and cut a fine figure at the same time. Winning the "Design & Innovation Award 2018" is proof of the Swiss company's technological and design signature. Whether on the road or on the country lane - the Flyer Upstreet models are at home everywhere.
"E-Crossover": The models that go by the melodious name of Goroc are true crossover bikes. They combine the best features of comfortable city bikes and grippy mountain bikes. Thanks to full suspension and the option of equipping the bikes with a dual battery, even long off-road tours without recharging are no problem.
"E-Mountain": Flyer's bike range is completed by the mountain bike model range. With the Uproc models, the name says it all: thanks to the powerful drive, grippy tyres and sporty gearing, amateur athletes fly towards the summit, true to the company name. High-quality frames, powerful disc brakes and balanced suspension characteristics also ensure that the ride down into the valley is an experience.
Which Flyer bike models are available?
- Flyer Uproc series - rocky fields, challenging trails, the steepest climbs and descents - this is where the Flyer Uproc models are in their element. A Flyer e-bike built for alpine terrain.

Sporty mountain bike genes, a powerful Bosch motor with intelligent FIT control and finely tuned full equipment make the Goroc the ultimate all-rounder.
- Flyer Gotour series - The Flyer Gotour series, like the Gotour2, are bikes "par excellence". Design, riding comfort and ergonomics are harmonised and combined in such a way that every ride becomes an individual pleasure.
