What bike size does my child need?

Which bike size is right for my child?

Children grow especially fast at a young age. Therefore, it will most likely be necessary to buy a new bike for your child several times. After all, you don't want them to be on a bike that is far too small. However, it is not too big a problem if the child's bike no longer fits the child's body size one hundred percent. Adjusting the handlebar and saddle height can usually remedy this. However, there should not be too much deviation, as this will not do your child's body any good. By the way, it is relatively easy to estimate the recommended wheel size based on the child's height. In contrast to bicycles for adults, this is an important factor for children's bicycles. Use the following list as a guide to find out which wheel size best fits your child. As usual, the size is given here in the form of inches.

Wheel sizes for children's bikes:

Note:
From a wheel size of 20 inches, bicycles are considered a means of transport as soon as children use them to participate in road traffic. This means they must comply with the StVO and meet the following criteria to be allowed to participate in road traffic. Bicycles need:

  • a bicycle bell
  • two brakes that can be operated independently of each other
  • white light in the front
  • red light at the back
  • two yellow reflectors on each pedal
  • two yellow reflectors per wheel
  • white reflector in front
  • one large and one small red reflector at the rear

A security lock is recommended as an anti-theft device.

What else should be considered when buying a child's bike?
Especially with children it is important that they are protected from possible dangers. Due to this fact, you should think carefully about which bike you buy for your child. The top priority is roadworthiness. This means that reflectors, lights and brakes have been installed by professionals and meet all requirements. If you buy children's bikes from Cube or Kross, this high-quality work is guaranteed. But the best safety precautions are of little use if your child does not develop any fun in cycling. Therefore, practical things should also be considered. Especially important for children is often the appearance of the bike. Your child will not want to ride a bike that he or she finds ugly. You certainly know best what your child likes. Take this knowledge into account when deciding what to buy and make your child happy. Make sure that the bike is not too heavy, otherwise the driving fun is quickly lost. Cycling then becomes a torture and not even smaller tours are fun for the child. Furthermore, you should be clear about what kind of brakes and gears you want for your child. If you are unsure, simply contact our consulting service. This will help you with the selection.
