From a wheel size of 20 inches, bicycles are considered a means of transport as soon as children use them to participate in road traffic. This means they must comply with the StVO and meet the following criteria to be allowed to participate in road traffic. Bicycles need:
- a bicycle bell
- two brakes that can be operated independently of each other
- white light in the front
- red light at the back
- two yellow reflectors on each pedal
- two yellow reflectors per wheel
- white reflector in front
- one large and one small red reflector at the rear
A security lock is recommended as an anti-theft device.
