Tools for home
You want to repair your bike at home? You want to know which tools are important?
The following tools are part of the basic equipment for home:
- Torque wrench
- Open-end wrench
- Allen wrench (Allen key)
- various screwdrivers (cross and slot)
- bicycle pump with pressure gauge and duo head for all common valves
- chain oil and grease
- repair kit or spare tube
- 2-3 tire levers
- pliers
Especially at home, it makes sense to pay attention to high-quality tools and workmanship (quality).
You want to make minor repairs and everyday adjustments to the bike yourself? With this equipment you will certainly succeed!
This includes for example
- Adjust saddle
- Adjust handlebar
- Adjust brakes
Change brake discs - Change tire, tube
It may be that components differ depending on the wheel manufacturer. Therefore, when purchasing should always be checked whether the respective tool fits the components. If this is not the case, the purchase of a special tool is necessary. This can occur, for example, when changing the chain, exchange of the sprocket set or when changing the bottom bracket.
Assembly stand
Anyone who regularly "works" on the bike should consider purchasing an assembly stand. The investment is worthwhile because the wheel is suspended from the seat post by means of a clamp and the wheel is thus freely accessible from all sides and does not roll away. Due to the height-adjustable bracket, the bike can be clamped at working height, the force can be optimally transferred to all bolted connections and yet all rotating parts remain movable.
Tools for on the road
For on the road, the basic equipment should be limited to the most important tools, this includes:
- Allen key
- Screwdriver
- Open-end wrench
- Patch kit
Multifunction tools (also called multitools) combine many of the most important tools in one. This makes it possible to do a lot of repair work on the bike with the help of a single, compact tool. However, they are not as convenient for home use, as the necessary lever length is missing.
It is best if the respective tool is stowed in the saddle or frame bag.
Repair Kit
The tire is flat and it is not possible to continue riding? Then a repair kit can provide relief. Depending on the equipment, there are different sized patches. After the hole is discovered, the flat tube, roughened with a strip of sandpaper. This improves the adhesion of the patch to the rubber surface. Then apply some vulcanizing adhesive, wait about 2 minutes and press the patch on firmly. The tube should be tight again - provided that all the holes have really been found.
In addition to the classic patching kit, tire levers can help with tire disassembly and assembly.
Tubeless repair kit
Tubless tires are considered unflat, puncture-free and self-healing. The sealing milk can repair minor holes within seconds. Over time, however, the sealing milk loses its functionality or reaches its limit eg with a slightly larger crack in the tire. For this emergency, there are also special patch sets for the tubeless tire. Thus, with a hand pump and a tubeless repair kit most punctures can be repaired.
Tubeless flicksets basically work on the same principle: there are several longer rubber snippets - depending on the manufacturer, these look something like sausages or sausages. Just in case, it is advisable to take a spare tube with you.
First Aid Kit
Although there is no obligation to carry a first aid kit, it makes sense to be equipped with a first aid kit. Especially during sports activities it can quickly come to abrasions or other injuries. For this reason, it is advisable to carry a first aid kit for first aid on a bike tour. So you can react immediately in case of emergency.
First aid kits differ in size and composition. The different productions they address the respective (special) requirements.
What should be considered when using the kit?
- The size of the kit should be adapted to the number of participants on the tour.
- A more extensive set is necessary for tours lasting several days
- In case of individual risks or pre-existing conditions, the contents of the set must be adapted (extended)
- Check the expiration date regularly.
First aid kits can be very extensive and take up a lot of space. A small first aid kit, on the other hand, can easily be stowed in the saddle or frame bag. If the first aid kit has eyelets or loops, it can be easily attached to the belt or bike itself. Make sure that everything is packed waterproof. In particular, the dressing material must be sterile and dry (remain).
Basically, the contents are up to you. The following might be of use:
- Sticking plaster
- Quick wound dressing
- Bandage pack
- Disposable gloves
- Compresses & fixation bandages
- Triangular cloth & emergency blanket
Important: The first aid kit should be checked and tested for function at regular intervals - the self-adhesive plasters could possibly lose their function (adhesive power) due to moisture. It should also be packed waterproof and UV resistant.
If material is taken out, it should be refilled immediately.
