Quick release or thru axle
This involves the attachment of the wheels in the frame. In recent years, two systems with different sub-variants have become established.
Quick release
The wheel is pushed through the downward open dropouts into the frame or fork and fixed by the pressure of the quick release.
Advantage:
Quick installation and removal of the wheels
Disadvantage:
Lower torsional stiffness compared to thru axles - oblique installation of the wheels.
Quick release skewers are currently found primarily on wheels with rim brakes. An exception are trekking bikes - here quick release skewers are also installed on wheels with disc brakes.
How do I mount the wheel with quick release?
Example rear wheel:
- To disassemble, first switch the front wheel to the large chainring, the rear wheel to the smaller chainring.
- First release the V-brakes, then release the quick release.
- Pull the shifting cage down and remove the wheel.
- To mount, unhook the V-brakes and loosen the quick release.
- Pull the shift cage down, insert the wheel and place the chain on the smallest sprocket.
- Close the quick release and hook in the V-brake.
Thru axle
The wheels are first inserted into the frame, then the axle is pushed through. Thru axles can be screwed depending on the design or similar to a quick release first screwed and then tightened via a lever. Another option is the attachment via a bayonet catch, which is then again secured via a lever.
Advantage:
higher resistance to high braking forces
more braking power
Wheels are always mounted correctly - the wheel is always exactly positioned
Thru axles are becoming increasingly popular on disc-braked wheels of all categories. They can be found on mountain bikes of all categories, on disc-braked road bikes, crossers and gravel racers. Fatbikes are also mostly equipped with thru axles.
How do I mount the wheel with thru axle?
Example rear wheel:
- To disassemble, first shift the rear wheel to the smallest sprocket.
- To loosen the thru axle, take a five-way Allen wrench and turn counterclockwise. Remove the quick-release axle.
- To remove the impeller more easily, pull the shift cage backward. Remove the impeller.
- To reassemble the impeller, follow the reverse procedure. Make sure that the disc is mounted exactly between the brake pads.
- Close the quick-release axle clockwise.
