Bikepacking - into the adventure!

BIKEPACKING – from sports equipment to motorhome - the adventure on wheels!

What is Bikepacking?
Bikepacking is based on the word backpacking, which in this context means traveling light with little luggage. The focus is on minimalist travel with little luggage, being connected with nature, experiencing freedom and deceleration. Adventure and driving fun are capitalized.

Bikepacking is all about using the space on the bike perfectly and optimally. In contrast to bike touring, bikepacking does away with large side panniers and any extra weight so that the bike remains light, agile, cross-country and fast. Sportiness and fast progress as well as easy handling are the focus. Wider and more off-road tires provide more comfort off-road (off-road).

The bike is used - whether mountain bikes, road bikes or crossers - as a carrier for bags. The bags can be attached to the seat post, on the saddle, in the frame triangle, on the top tube and at the front of the handlebar. The handlebar is suitable for elongated luggage such as sleeping mats or wide bags.

Which bike is suitable for bikepacking?
Basically, any bike with a diamond or trapezoid frame is suitable for bikepacking. Modern mountain bikes are perfectly suitable in any shape. The luggage is stowed in special bag systems that are attached directly to the bike. Side bags on the luggage rack are often dispensed with. Saddlebags up to 20 liters packing volume, frame bags for heavy items and compact handlebar wheels or handlebar bags offer many options and plenty of space for the equipment.

Always keep in mind the extra weight. Any extra weight can affect the handling of your bike. Heavy luggage should come as close as possible to the saddle or close to the center of gravity of the bike, so the bag is stable. The bike should remain light and agile.

What clothing do I need?
For bikepacking you only need your usual cycling clothing. Look for functional clothing that keeps you warm and dries quickly. Special cycling shorts with padding can make sitting for long periods of time more comfortable. A change of underwear and weather protection clothing such as a rain jacket and rain pants are essential. Depending on the season, a warmer fleece or down jacket may also be useful for cooler days or nights. In order to be well prepared, you should definitely familiarize yourself with the climate of your destination or region beforehand.

You should have a helmet and sunglasses with you on every trip. The glasses will protect you from dust, wind and insects. Gloves, for a better grip, can also be an advantage, as they not only protect the hands, but can also cushion any shocks.

Where do you spend the night?
Overnight is often in a tent or outdoors / in nature. Tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads and stoves (camping utensils) are now also available in "bikepacking-suitable" variations. These models are often a bit more expensive, but any extra weight to move requires some (more) energy. The tent should be large enough, but still have the lightest possible weight and be made of sturdy materials. A lightweight sleeping pad will help you sleep better and more comfortably. You should also pay attention to the weight of the sleeping bag. The warmer the sleeping bag, the heavier it is.

What do I need? What should not be missing in any case?
Make sure you have enough power for your trip. With the help of power tanks you can easily recharge mobile phones/smartphones, navigation devices. Sometimes foldable solar panels can help and recharge your devices with power.

In addition, you should always have a tool (multi-tool), repair kit or spare tubes for your bike with you. Read more here.
A first aid kit, an air pump, bicycle lock and good bicycle lighting are also mandatory equipment.

Thanks to navigation and GPX data, individual trips can be quickly put together and realized nowadays. There are several navigation apps on the market, after a short research and a little practice, everyone will find a suitable app for themselves.
If necessary, get help and tips for planning and carrying out your trip and also consider whether the route and the route profile are suitable for your fitness. In any case, it is worthwhile to prepare well for your "bikepacking adventure". This way your tour will be an unforgettable experience.
