Brake pads
Bicycle brakes - but safe!
The principle of every bicycle brake is based on friction. A brake pad is pressed against a rotating component of a wheel - the rim, brake disc or the inside of the hub - and generates friction. The more pressure is applied, the higher the friction and thus the braking force.
With friction, however, there is also wear. This means that when you brake, you lose speed on the one hand, but on the other hand the brake pads also wear out - they wear out and have to be replaced regularly. So anyone who brakes always loses a little brake lining as well.

Types of bicycle brakes
Three different types of brakes are used on a modern bicycle: the disc brake, the rim brake and the drum brake.
While the disc brake exerts its force on a disc mounted on the hub, the rim brake has two brake pads directly on the rim and acts there to decelerate the wheel. The drum brake is integrated into the hub, completely encapsulated and does not require maintenance. Wear is minimal here.
More about the different types can be found here.
