Mountain bikes - perfectly equipped for any terrain

If you love to ride your bike off-road and roll over hill and dale, you should have a suitable bike model at hand for this purpose. The broadly diversified bicycle market offers a wide range of products for this purpose. Mountain bikes are exactly the kind of bike that make it possible to become a top conqueror on rough terrain. Different specifications allow everyone to find their ideal bike and thus find their way to the mountains. You can get all the information about the most affordable and top quality MTBs here. Because there are some aspects that you need to consider when choosing.

What types of mountain bikes are there?

The variety of branded mountain bikes is now very large. Bike manufacturers like Scott or Mondraker have specialized in constantly developing their models. In terms of looks, the respective brands often follow different philosophies, which also bring with them a brand-specific recognition value. However, these are not of great importance when it comes to the intended use of the respective MTB. Here there are two categories that are fundamentally different. We are talking about so-called hardtail mountain bikes and fullys.

What is the difference between hardtail and full MTBs?

Mountain bikes are used off-road and therefore have a suspension system that helps to absorb shocks and vibrations. In a hardtail, this suspension is only installed in the front fork and the rear part of the bike is stiff, as the name suggests. In contrast, the MTB-Fully has an additional damping integrated under the saddle. This damping allows you to have as much traction as possible at all times. It reacts very sensitively to roots, stones and branches and absorbs the shocks completely, so that the bike does not jump and the traction is maintained. Even in complicated downhill passages, it is thus possible to keep control of the MTB. Of course, complicated additional damping is also associated with an extra weight that has to be dragged up the mountain. Whether the riding comfort is worth this greater effort is something you have to decide for yourself. Alternatively, lighter hardtail mountain bikes are an option. When climbing, the saved weight can add to the enjoyment. However, it must be reckoned with the fact that in the downhill segments a cautious action becomes necessary. If the bike starts to bounce, it is almost impossible to regain control. Because when the wheels are in the air, steering maneuvers are ineffective.

Which mountain bike suits me?

Hardtails are especially suitable for beginners, as they are lighter and complicated descents will most likely not play a big role yet. Experienced mountain bikers also like to choose a full mountain bike and thus invest a little more money, but then enjoy breathtaking descents at a fast pace. However, the decision is always completely individual. If you can't decide whether it should be the MTB hardtail from BMC or the Fully mountain bike from Santa Cruz, our cycling advice is available here with outstanding expertise and will make the decision easier for you. Thanks to the experience of our consultants, you will be able to find out whether you need an MTB for cross country tours, want to race down the mountain on a downhill bike or choose an enduro MTB that will accompany you through all terrains.

What suspension travel is necessary?

When choosing a suitable mountain bike, the suspension plays a role even if it is not a matter of deciding between a full-suspension and front-suspension only bike. This is because the suspension travel also differs greatly from model to model. If the MTB is to be used for downhill riding and for big jumps, a different suspension is required than for a cross country bike, which is mainly ridden with solid ground contact. Depending on the place of use, the suspension travel will increase. While classic bikes without rear suspension have a travel of about 100 mm, some downhill bikes even have a travel of up to 240 mm. MTB Fullys and Enduros lie in the range between these two extremes.

How much money needs to be invested?

When considering which mountain bike is the best fit, financing is naturally also of great importance. If this were not the case, the entire market would not make sense. Because in that case, every interested cyclist would buy the highest quality MTB. The fact is, however, that the price range between the inexpensive bikes and the professional models is very wide. Overall, the fact is that full-suspension bikes involve a higher investment than the lighter MTB hardtails due to the suspension technology. Entry-level models are already available here for about 500 to 600 €. Especially the affordable models of the German manufacturer Cube convince with high quality at a low price. The cheapest fully mountain bikes are in the price range between 1500 and 2000 €. The more expensive the models, the higher the quality of the various components and the lower the weight. The riding fun benefits immensely and climbing is easier. However, the top class models also come with a price tag of at least 2500 € for the semi-suspension and over 4000 € for the full-suspension versions. Before buying, you should therefore carefully consider for what purpose and how intensively the new MTB is likely to be used.

Which frame size fits?

As with any bike, the right size is essential for a mountain bike. However, this does not only include the perfect dimensions of the tire to allow for optimal agility and control. Of far greater importance for beginners is the right frame height. This is selected depending on the body measurements and allows you to ride the bike comfortably and economically. Frames that are too small or too large do not contribute to well-being in the long run. Uncomfortable sitting positions can cause annoying back or neck pain and the power transmission to the pedals is no longer optimal. Therefore, use a frame size calculator to find out which height suits your body.

In just a few steps, you can find your new favourite mountain bike and enjoy riding in the forests, hills and mountains of the surrounding area.
