Why should the chain be clean?
Bicycle chains are an extremely effective drive. When a cyclist pedals, almost 100 percent of the pedaling power is transferred to the rear wheel. However, chains are constantly exposed to environmental influences such as rain and resulting corrosion, contamination by mud, sand, dust and road dirt. These contaminants can accumulate over time and form a stubborn layer of dirt on the chain. The increased friction causes the chain and drive to wear to the point of being unusable in a very short time. Regular cleaning and subsequent lubrication counteracts wear and significantly extends the life of a chain.
If the necessary lubrication is missing, the chain can run dry and the increased friction leads to premature wear. Too much oil, on the other hand, attracts road dirt, dust and sand. This mix of dirt and oil acts like sandpaper and also leads to heavy wear on the chain and sprocket.
It is therefore optimal to clean the chain thoroughly before oiling and then allow it to dry. While the chain is running over the smallest sprocket, apply the oil to the rollers at the joint gap. It is best to let the oil soak in overnight. Then wipe off the excess oil from the outside of the chain with a dry rag to prevent new dirt from adhering.
Optimal care is achieved by sparingly dosing and repeating the care process. The use of chain oil significantly reduces friction and allows the chain to run very smoothly. Even when driving in the rain, the drive is optimally protected by the high wash-off resistance.
Three tips for chain care
- Lubricate the bicycle chain about every 100-200km.
- Clean the chain before lubrication to remove impurities that impair the adhesion and creep of the chain oil.
- Always spray the chain oil thinly and evenly and then let it flash off well - overnight is ideal.
