Inflate tires

How do I pump up the tire?
First of all, you need a bicycle pump. Which bicycle pump is gbraucht, also depends on the valve There are different valves. You can find information about the valve types here.

Basically, a distinction is made between the following bicycle pumps:

  • Floor pump
  • Mini pump / frame pump
  • CO2 pumps

Always make sure that your bike is well positioned and that the valves are in the 12 o'clock position.

Floor pump
The purchase of a floor pump with two outlets (small hole: Dunlop/Sclaverand valve and large hole: car valve) pays off if you regularly ride your bike. Due to the high pump volume, you can easily and quickly inflate your tires.

Before you get started, make sure you have the right valve attachment on your pump head. The pump head itself must be clamped, for this you move the lever upwards until it forms a straight extension to the valve. With little effort, you can pump air directly into the tube. Mostly you can also check the tire pressure with a floor pump.

Frame pump - mini pump
A frame pump is - as the name suggests - attached to the frame and is therefore always handy on the bike. A mini pump is a practical alternative. Due to its size, it is easy and uncomplicated to pack (take along) and is also quickly available in case of need.

However, these pumps usually only have a Dunlop / Sclaverand valve to "put on". Care is also required when pumping, as the head of the pump is attached directly to the valve. If too much force is used, you could bend or tear off the valve.

CO2 pumps
CO2 pumps are cartridges with small attachments. They are light and small. However, they can only be used once and are not sustainable.

No matter what pump you use, checking the air pressure regularly is important because small amounts of air are lost all the time. It also protects the tire and prevents flat tires.

FAQ

How can I tell if I have too little air in my tire?
If you have the feeling that you are constantly riding against the wind, it is possible that you have too little air pressure.

How can I tell if I have too much air in my tire?
When you can feel every little stone in your hands and butt.

Adjust tire pressure

How do I set the tire pressure?
The choice of air pressure is individual and depends on the area of use, driving style, the type of tires and the weight of the driver.

Safe on the road
The right tire pressure is important to minimize the risk of a puncture. It also keeps your tires from wearing out as quickly. It's best to check your tire pressure every 2-3 weeks, as the tube is constantly losing smaller amounts of air.

Optimal tire pressure
With the tire pressure you can play out the comfort.

  • A tire with high air pressure rolls faster on smooth surfaces, but is less able to absorb bumps and has less grip.
  • A tire with low air pressure can cushion bumps better, has more grip, but rolls slightly worse on slippery surfaces due to the increased contact area.

As a rule of thumb:
The wider your tire, the less pressure is necessary. The thinner your tire (road bike tire), the more pressure is needed. However, you should still take into account your own weight or any luggage or the e-bike battery. The heavier the bike, the more pressure is needed.

This means that the tire pressure has an effect on

  • Rolling resistance
  • Grip
  • Suspension and propulsion
  • Tire stability on the rim
  • Puncture protection

Most tires have an air pressure indication on the sidewall. To avoid damage to the tire and tube, choose an air pressure within the specified range. For safety reasons, the upper limit should never be exceeded.

With a suitable bicycle pump (pay attention to the valve!) you can quickly and easily set your optimal tire pressure.

FAQ

Where can I find the maximum tire pressure?
The tire pressure can be found on the sidewall of the tire and is usually given in bar. Always pay attention to the minimum and maximum air pressure to avoid damage to the tire and tube by too little or too much air pressure.

Can I check the pressure with my thumb?
No. From about 2 bar the tire feels hard, beyond that you can hardly notice any differences.

Do front and rear wheels need the same tire pressure?
Depending on the seating position, the load distribution is different. Basically, there is more load on the rear wheels, so the rear wheel can tolerate a little more air.

How often should I check the tire pressure?
It is best to check regularly every 3-4 weeks. Even if the bike is not used, the air pressure can decrease.
If you are on the road a lot, you can of course check the pressure every time before riding.
